Not the usual neck-pillow list. These are the things people who fly constantly keep permanently in the bag — including one at #4 that most travellers have never considered.
1A refillable bottle, empty
Airside water costs a fortune and cabin air is drier than most deserts. Take an empty bottle through security and fill it at the gate. The single highest-value thing you can carry, and it costs nothing.
2Filter earplugs rather than headphones
Noise-cancelling headphones are bulky and dead after eight hours. Filter earplugs cut the engine drone without the clamping pressure, weigh nothing, and don't need charging.
3A proper lip balm and a small moisturiser
Cabin humidity sits around 10–20%. Lower than the Sahara. Everyone notices their skin afterwards and almost nobody plans for it.
4Oil of oregano, in softgel form
This is the one that surprises people.
Anyone who flies regularly has the same thought sitting in row 34: you are breathing the same recirculated air as three hundred strangers, for six hours, in a sealed tube. It's not paranoia — it's just what a plane is.
Oil of oregano is one of the oldest traditional botanicals in the Mediterranean, used long before anyone put it in a capsule. The naturally occurring active constituent is carvacrol, and the amount of it is the specification worth comparing — most brands quietly don't publish theirs.
Two practical notes. First, it tastes genuinely harsh — that's normal, and it's why most people buy a bottle once and never finish it. Second, dropper bottles are awkward through security and leak at altitude, which is why softgels are the sensible travel format.
5A spare charging cable, not just the brick
Cables fail far more often than adapters do, and airport shops know exactly what a desperate traveller will pay for one.
6Snacks you actually like
Airline food is a lottery and airport food is a tax. Two things you genuinely enjoy, packed in advance, will improve a long-haul more than any gadget.
7A packed bag that never gets unpacked
Keep a permanent travel pouch — earplugs, balm, cable, the lot. Repacking from scratch every trip is how things get forgotten. Restock it when you get home, not when you're leaving.
