Week two of school is when it starts. Here's what I do differently now.

Family · Real Stories

Every September my house fell over like dominoes. One mum's honest account of the small change to her routine — and what she wishes she'd known sooner.

If you have school-age kids you already know the timeline. The first week is fine. Everyone's excited, the uniforms still fit, the lunchboxes come home empty.

Then week two arrives.

One of them comes home a bit quiet. By Thursday they're on the sofa. By the weekend it's gone round the house. By the following Wednesday I've got it too — and I'm the one who has to keep the whole thing running regardless.

The corner of the kitchen where our morning routine happens.

For years I treated that as weather. Something that just happened to us every autumn.

What actually bothered me wasn't being ill

It was the logistics.

The rearranged work. The cancelled plans. The two nights of broken sleep. The guilt of pushing on when you've already used your flexibility that month.

I didn't want a miracle. I wanted one thing I could actually do, instead of just waiting for it to arrive.

That's a small distinction but it changed how I thought about it. I stopped looking for something that would stop the season happening, and started looking for something that made me feel less passive during it.

Where oregano oil came in

My sister-in-law had a bottle on her windowsill for years. I'd assumed it was one of those things people buy once and never touch.

It turns out oil of oregano is one of the oldest and best-known traditional botanicals there is — used across the Mediterranean for centuries, long before anyone was selling it in a softgel. The compound people talk about is carvacrol, the naturally occurring active constituent in oregano.

Two softgels a day. That's the whole ritual.

I'm not going to tell you it does anything dramatic, because I don't know that and neither does anyone selling it to you. What I can tell you is what it became for us: a small, deliberate part of the morning through autumn and winter, the way some people take vitamin D.

What I wish I'd known before buying

  • Carvacrol content is the number that matters. Most labels shout about milligrams of oregano, which tells you almost nothing. If a brand won't publish its carvacrol figure, that tells you something. Ours is standardised to 165 mg per serving, printed on the pouch.
  • The species matters more than the marketing. Common garden oregano runs 30–50% carvacrol. Ours is Origanum minutiflorum, the high-carvacrol Turkish species.
  • It tastes genuinely awful. Nobody warns you. Straight oil of oregano is one of the harshest things you can put in your mouth — which is exactly why most people buy one bottle and abandon it. Softgels solve that entirely.
  • Consistency beats intensity. Two softgels a day as part of a routine is the whole point. This isn't something you take once in a panic.

The honest part

Do I think a pouch of oregano oil is going to change your autumn? No. Nothing does. Term starts, everyone shares everything, that's the deal.

What changed for me was smaller and, honestly, a bit more psychological than I expected. Having one deliberate thing in the morning routine made the season feel less like something happening to us.

It's been three years. I order it before term starts the way I buy new shoes in August. It's just part of how the year begins now.

One practical note: order it before you need it. Delivery takes 12–15 business days, so this is a plan-ahead purchase, not a react-on-Tuesday one. That's honestly part of why it works — it's a routine, not a rescue.
